In the United States the leading causes of death are heart disease, cancer, chronic lower respiratory diseases, and stroke. These diseases are often caused or at least assisted by behavior that weakens the body. This behavior can be modified.

We now know that smoking is a leading cause of death; however, poor diet and physical inactivity also weaken our bodies. Being overweight or obese greatly increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, many types of cancer, diabetes, gall bladder disorders and other illnesses.

The reasons why in the U.S. the population of those obese and/or with chronic diseases increases:

  • Limited time. In a fast-paced society that has large numbers of fast-food outlets and restaurants, eating out is very convenient.
  • Most fast food outlets, cafeterias, snack bars and vending machines have very few, if any, healthy choices.
  • Most processed food available in stores contains ingredients that are unhealthy.
  • Physical inactivity has increased due to labor-saving devices such as computers; modern home entertainment such as DVD games and vast media availability; security concerns; lack of sidewalks, walking trails and bike paths.
  • Unhealthy habits that include alcohol, tobacco and/or controlled substances.
